Abstract

We report EXAFS studies on the local structures of Zn and Co additives used to stabilize β″-alumina and of Y and Zr in yttria stabilized zirconia. The additives in β″ replace Al in tetrahedrally coordinated sites and expand the M-O bonds about the site. In YSZ, the Y-O bonds are longer than the Zr-O bonds, and the oxygen vacancies are bound preferentially to Y.
