Student Engagement as Microcultural: Empirical and Conceptual Arguments from a Teacher Residency Program

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Much is known about individual- to school-levels of student engagement, but more work is needed for local- to global-contexts. We worked with a 15-month residency program in the Northeast US, conducting two focus groups that sought to better understand Residents', Mentors', Administrators', and students' conceptions and perceptions of student engagement. Our qualitative phenomenological study evidences what we call microcultural engagement, a framing that juxtaposes smaller- and larger-scale levels of learning and development.
