Abstract
We find and solve the conditions for a N = 1, D = 4 supersymmetric nonlinear Maxwell theory which guarantee that the field equation of the auxiliary field is algebraic. We show that, under our assumptions, one cannot match the bosonic part of the superstring effective action of Tseytlin unless supersymmetry is spontaneously broken.
