Abstract
Blending of two homopolymers is a technique often used to obtain a single material possessing desirable characteristics of both component homopolymers. Because of its low cost and versatility, blends of poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, have been extensively studied. The present work examines the four possible binary blends, cast from MEK, of low molecular weight (83,500 PVC; 33,300 PMMA) and high molecular weight (193,600 PVC; 490,200 PMMA) homopolymers. The results show that molecular weight has an effect on blend compatibility and/or surface enrichment. Angle dependent ESCA and ATR-FTIR were used to determine surface compositions and differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine compatibility of the bulk phase.
