Abstract
Cellulose tosylate was prepared by reacting cotton cellulose dissolved in an ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmimCl) with p-tosyl chloride (TsCl) at 25 °C in the presence of pyridine. The effects of the reaction time and molar ratio of TsCl/anhydroglucose unit (AGU) on the degree of substitution (DS) were investigated. The obtained products were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogrametry (TG). The results indicated that the cotton cellulose was successfully tosylated in BmimCl, and the highest DS was 1.43. The cotton cellulose was easily tosylated with tosyl chloride through the deconstruction of crystalline cellulose in the ionic liquid. Finally, the thermal stability was also evaluated, showing that the thermal stability of cotton cellulose was remarkably decreased through dissolution and tosylation in BmimCl.
