Abstract
We find that GeIV substitutes cleanly for AlIII at the central tetrahedral site in the AlO4Al12(OH)24 (OH2)127+ polyoxocation, creating a GeO4Al12(OH)24 (OH2)128+ cation with some slight structural distortion, but a structure that overall still resembles an ε-Keggin molecule. These substituted aluminum polyoxo molecules are important because they resemble structural fragments at the surface of common aluminum (hydr)-oxide minerals and can be used to study in detail the kinetics of oxygen exchanges with bulk solution.
