Abstract

Tetrafluoro(trifluoromethyl)-λ6-sulfanylethyl acrylate, a novel acrylate monomer, was polymerized by initiation with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) at 60 °C to form a soft gel. This novel fluorinated ester was prepared by condensation of excess acryloyl chloride with 2-(tetrafluoro(trifluoromethyl)-λ6-sulfanyl)ethan-1-ol. Thermal decomposition of the polymer begins at 180 °C. Aqueous wetting by static contact measurement yielded a contact angle of 98°.
