Abstract

The development of a terawatt CO2 laser will consist of a TEA oscillator, semiconductor slicing system driven by a picosecond pulse Nd:YAG laser, and a high pressure amplifier. Variable duration pulses may be sliced from the nanosecond oscillator output, TE discharge amplifier module with a regenerative cavity and internal multipass optics. Because the pressure broadening at 10 atmosphere provides a gain spectrum of 1 THz, pulses as short as 1 ps may be amplified to high powers. The ultimate limit in delivered energy will be the damage threshold of the 10 cm diameter windows which is approximately 50 J.
