Testing AGCM-predicted cloud and radiation properties with arm data: The super-parameterization approach

Abstract

The use of the super parameterization (SP) approach to validate the global climate models (GCM) predicted cloud and radiation properties with atmospheric radiation measurement (ARM) data is discussed. The SP approach consists of a two-dimensional cloud-resolving model (CRM) embedded into each grid of the NCAR community atmospheric model (CAM). The combination of ARM data and CAM-SP simulations provides a unique framework for testing the model ability to represent real cloud fields as well as the effects of the cloud fields. The analysis of the cloud fraction, precipitation and downwelling solar radiation flux at the surface are also presented.
