Abstract
The accuracy of single frequency code-based GPS positions were determined in a variety of forest types and densities, each with both leaf off and leaf on foliage conditions. The code-based GPS positions were compared to positions obtained with dual frequency survey-grade GPS receivers. Quantitative canopy densities were determined through the analysis of digital imagery collected at the study plots. The average three-dimensional accuracy for plot positions with leaf off and leaf on state is 3.5 and 5.0 meters respectively. The horizontal position accuracy was generally 2.0 meters for both the leaf off and leaf on state. Forest type was not a large source of variation in position accuracy. Plot density was the most important variable with light density plots having the most accurate positions.
