Abstract
Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis was employed to study the effect of alloyed Mo and aqueous molybdate on the structure and chemistry of passive films formed on ferritic stainless steels in neutral chloride solutions. Results support thermodynamic arguments which explain that Mo6+ incorporation into the film results in an increased O2-)>/OH-)> ratio thus enhancing the films' structural and chemical resistance to Calpha-)> penetration.
