The measurement of infrared spectra of aqueous solutions using Fourier transform spectroscopy

Abstract

Infrared spectra of aqueous solutions of electrolytes and nonelectrolytes were recorded using a Fourier transform spectrometer. Most of the work involved internal reflection spectroscopy. It was possible to detect the bands below 1600 cm-1 of various solutes at concentrations near 0.01 M. Also, C-H and N-H bands could be observed in the vicinity of the intense water stretching band. The presence of solutes affects the absorption of water, so that spectra of aqueous solutions show distortions of the background in the vicinity of the water stretching and deformation bands.
