Abstract
Argues that researchers should examine both the identity that older people assign to themselves, that assigned to them by others in society, and the interplay between the two. The elderly are at the centre of a series of demographic and social changes in American society, as more people live longer and yet are defined as 'roleless' within the social structure. Public policy fundamentally affects the identity of the elderly. -M.Higgins
