Abstract
We show that both the shadowing and anti-shadowing observed in hadron and photon interactions with nuclei are due to quantum-mechanical coherence and interference. As such, they differ in different reactions and cannot be treated as nuclear modifications of parton structure functions. We apply this to hadron- and photon-induced charmonium production on nuclear targets, obtaining shadowing in the first case and anti-shadowing in the latter.
