Abstract

Atacamite, Cu₂Cl(OH)₃, from Mina La Farola, Chile, has cell dimensions a 6.030(2), b 6.865(2), c 9.120(2) A, space group Pnma and Z = 4. The results of the previous structure determination (M.A. 11-98) are confirmed, including the distortion of the Cu octahedra. The hydrogen atoms have been located and the hydrogen bonding is described. The atacamite structure is related to the spinel type, AB₂X₄, by substitution of 3H for the tetrahedral cation, (H₃)Cu₂(O₃Cl).-J.E.C.
