Abstract

After self annealing of pre mRNA at high values of Cot, about 20% of the material becomes resistant to ribonuclease digestion. This was explained by the existence of self complementary sequences (scRNA) in the molecules of pre mRNA. The isolation and properties of scRNA are described. The molecular weight of the single strand of scRNA is 1500 (45-50 nucleotides). Hybridization data suggest that scRNA is transcribed from reiterated sites of genome. It may be concluded that almost all rapidly hybridizing sequences of pre mRNA are self complementary.
