Abstract

This paper examines two kinds of cultural transplantation of proper names: One is directed toward domestication and the other is directed toward foreignization. The qualitative study of English translations of two Japanese literary texts shows that cultural transplantation of proper names can seriously ruin not only the text's pragmatic integrity, but also the major authorial theme.
