Abstract
The ionic conductivity of single crystals of magnesium and calcium ion-exchanged Llano vermiculite have been measured in an attempt to determine the nature of the dominant mobile species. The calcium ions diffuse much more rapidly than magnesium ions in vermiculite and even faster than calcium ions in β-alumina. Analysis of the pre-exponential factor in the temperature dependence of the conductivity suggests a high activation entropy of motion; this may be associated with the loss of more than three waters of hydration from the cation during jumps from site to site.
