Trump, Race, and Demagogy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

There has been a resurgence of racialized demagogy in recent years in the USA but clothed in right-wing populism, represented most clearly by the demagogic politics of the self-proclaimed billionaire, Donald J. Trump. By means of an interdisciplinary combination of current and archival library and online-based primary and secondary sources (informed by perspectives from a pluralistic non-positivistic qualitative methodology), the task of this chapter is to, first, document how this racism was manifest (especially in the face of denials by his supporters, including, most ironically, by some from among those very groups who were the target of his racism), and, second, to indicate its political functions today in a neoliberal capitalist democracy.
