Abstract
Intracavitary leiomyomas represent a subtype of submucous leiomyomas and rarely are seen as a prolapsing or aborting leiomyoma. In a study of 1785 women undergoing abdominal surgery for uterine leiomyomas, Smith and colleagues noted that the prevalence of prolapsing submucous leiomyomas was 2.7%. We describe an unusual case in which a previously considered intramural leiomyoma was associated with prolonged postpartum hemorrhage and was diagnosed correctly with transvaginal ultrasonography as a large aborting submucous intracavitary leiomyoma in a woman presenting with fever, persistent uterine bleeding, and lower abdominal pain.
