Abstract
Introduction Diode lasers are excellent tools for soft tissue removal due to their strong ability for thermo-mechanical cutting and supplying adequate hemostatic control. The 445nm blue light is an emerging diode laser that may provide additional benefits in soft tissue surgery. Materials and Methods Histologic comparison in bovine gingiva of the 445nm vs. 970nm is explained and two split-mouth clinical cases are demonstrated. Specifically, a case of epulis fissuratum removal due to an ill-fitting denture, and an exposure of orthodontic implants Results Direct histologic comparison of the 445nm and 970nm wavelengths displays increased thermal effects in the 445nm diode when examined in bovine gingiva with Elastin van Gieson (EVG) staining. However, the cases displayed that the 445nm may have improved coagulation in soft tissue surgery and accelerated wound healing. Conclusion The 445nm diode laser provides potential advantages to clinicians in soft tissue excisions and periodontal therapy. Additional research is needed to evaluate the significance of this wavelength when compared to other infrared laser wavelengths.
